I have some elephant ears (alocasia) in my back yard, and I am wondering how to make more in another location. I noticed that the roots are shooting up and out, and new plants are forming. So I am thinking, can I simply cut pieces off of these roots, and plant them elsewhere to instantly make new plants?

I read a couple of different sites and eHow seemed to have the best infromation:

You can dig the bulbs in spring or fall.  Digging in fall is the easiest.  Place a shovel well beside the plant and push deep into the soil and pry up.  Then dig into the soil with your hands and pull out the bulbs.  Separate bulbs from the clumps.  Pland the bulbs in separate holes.  Make the holes deep enough to cover the bulbs with two inches of soil.  Place the bulbs iwth the roots down and leaves pointing up.  Cover and pat soil down with your hands. After the bulbs are panted, put cut grass, mulch, or some type of cover to keep the grass and weed growth minimized.  Water and keep watered well for about two weeks.

Thank you and Happy Gardening! ~ Sarah
