Hi Is it usual for renga renga lilies to die off a bit this time of year? They haven't been in the ground very long. but in a mass palnting some are 'dying' off(?) others look very healthy?!

Hi,
Yes, renga renga lilies do die back over winter. Being in the area that you are, you are prone to frosts and this will turn the leaves to slime! Very unattractive! However, don't worry, they will, in all probability, pop up again in the spring. (I hope that they have been in long enough to establish- that is why I say probably)
Rengas are best under trees, that way they get some protection but inevitably, they will look pretty ghastly in the winter, even if they don't lose all their foliage. Slugs and snails love them, so try and keep the area between them clean - ie remove all the dead foliage. In the spring, you can use slug bait as those fresh new tips are like ambrosia to slugs and snails - but PLEASE - be mindful of children and pets. Good luck!
