To change the color of your hydrangea to pink, the plants must not take up aluminum from the soil. A few tricks that work... add lime several times per year or use a fertilizer with high levels of phosphorus.

To change the color of your hydrangea to blue, aluminum must be present in the soil. To make the aluminum available to the plant, the pH of the soil should be low (5.2 - 5.5). Sulfur will lower the pH of your soil.

More info on this subject can be found at www.hydrangeashydrangeas.com/colorchange.html

I didn't know you could actually change the color of your flower. I am certainly going to look at that website. I love hydrangeas and wondered why there were different colors at other people's houses.
Thanks for the tips and I will try adding lime to the plant.

Thank you for this tip, Jody.

I will have to add sulfur to my hydrangeas to make the blooms more blue, then. Is it possible to overdo this kind of thing?
what will happen if I overdose my hydrangeas with sulfur?

I did not know that either! We bought a couple of hydrangeas last year, they are supposed to be lavender in color, but they have not bloomed yet. There were also white and pink ones available, and I thought that it's permanent - you buy the color you want, and that's what you get. How interesting.
