I recently read an article in the March/April Issue of gardening How-to regarding container gardening. It was titled "inside the box" under the Expert Advice Section. A reader questioned whether there were advantages to growing vegetables in containers and which ones they would recommend. I really enjoyed the response. Several advantages included taking up less space, you won't see as many soil-borne diseses and pests because the containers use soil-less planting mediums. Also, you give the exact amount of fertilizer and water to suit its needs. Another advantage was to add a decorative touch to your landscaping. The suggested plants were the following variteies tthat are bred for copact size; Better Bush Improved and Patio Prize tomoatoes, Babay Oak and Tom Thumb lettuce, Spacemaster and Bush Champion cucumbers and Thumbelina and Little Finer carrots.
They also suggested to use containers with drainage holes for good drainage.

I've got tomatoes in pots this year. Most of my garden space is taken up with flowers and herbs already so since I must grow tomatoes every year, I always do them in containers! This year I have "Mortgage Lifter" (which is gigantic, by the way...I've never grown such a huge tomato plant in a pot before, but it's working!), "Yellow Cherry", "Black Brandywine", and "Glacier" tomatoes started. I just can't eat a store bought tomato...they're just tasteless to me so I'm anxiously looking forward to nice, fresh, flavorful, REAL tomato!!!!
