I moved into a new house about 2 months ago. its a new house with a new lawn, bahia grass is what they put down I guess because it used less water. I live in central florida.
ok heres the deal, my grass looks kinda sparse, it doesn't look really bad, but it needs to fill in and become thicker, it would be nice if it was greener too. alot of people are telling me that's just how bahia grass is and it takes a long time for it to fill in, other people are telling me I have to remove the thatch, some say don't.
um help! what do you guys recomend? I put down some millorganite a few times but it didn't really do much.

if your mower has been sitting for quite awhile the carb might be gummed up. gas goes bad after awhile and turns green which clogs up the passages in the carb, you will have to take the bowl off thebottom of the carb and clean the jet screw and bowl area. empty all the old gas and put in new. if you have spark it should start. as for your other troubles i cannot help you there.

If it is a newly layed lawn like you say, provided it was bought from a turf company and not taken from an old lawn, i dont think the thatch would be a problem as yet...

have you tried giving it some TLC , newly layed lawns require lots of water to help assist in root growth developement (I would recommend watering it deep and infrequent rather than constant little bits here and there as doing it this way can keep the top moist for too long and cause disease) Feeding it with a starter fertiliser with a lower rate of nitrogen but a high rate of Phosphorus will stop you burning the leaf and help kick start the root growth.

I wouldnt hurt to even give it a topdress with some soil in those bare areas to help the turf knit in together once it starts growing again.

Bahia lawns
Maintenance Suggestions

Bahia is a great grass for year-round low maintenance requirements during normal seasons of rainfall.  Its most intensive maintenance practice is its need for weekly (5-7 days) mowing intervals during the growing season.

Mowing Bahia

Best mowing height is 2-3 inches; Use a frequent mowing schedule to keep the lawn looking their best and fertilize as needed.  --- Goes dormant and turns brown/tannish color in winter after frost.  May be over seeded with ryegrass for year round green color.  The annual growing season is early May -  late August.

Watering: Bahia is somewhat drought resistant, but requires watering on a regular basis to get the lawn established especially in the seedling stage and also to promote better germination. Argentine requires more water than Pensacola. Irrigation systems may be required in drought prone areas and during dry seasons in the rainy areas.  Bahiagrass will go dormant and turn brown during drought situations but survives long period of drought very well.  It also responds quickly to rainfall after droughts, greening up fast.

Diseases & Pests: Bahia has only a few disease problems, none of which are severe and can usually be managed through correct fertilization practices.  Pests are minor with the exception of Mole Crickets.
