There are a lot of innovative things you can do to help reduce your rubbish.
Ideas for recycling paper:
*After children's drawings and paintings have been displayed for a while they can be used to wrap presents - this also makes the present special.
*Discarded A4-sized paper can be cut and stapled together to make notepads. Alternatively, if you save five reams, it will cost you about $5 to get a print company to convert this paper into 'proper' notepads.
*'Use the envelopes you receive in the mail a second time by placing a new address label over the last address. I call this the OMT System ("One more time system"). Old envelopes can also be used for scribbling down shopping lists, to-do lists, and notes.'
*Resealable envelopes can be reused many times: 'My daughter takes one to school when she orders her lunch. The envelope has all details written in felt on the front and the money sealed inside. She brings the envelope home and we use it again until it gets too shabby.'
*Old calendars, colourful pictures, etc. can be used to make your own envelopes. You can unstick a used envelope and use it as a template for making envelopes.
*Old rolls of wallpaper can be used for childrens' drawings.
*Junk mail can be used as scrap paper, or as bedding for pets.
*Cardboard cartons can be used to collect paper for recycling, instead of plastic bags (even breakfast cereal cartons are good).
*SPCA and pet shops appreciate old newspapers.
*Toilet roll centres can be recycled - they're made of cardboard.
*To fill in a rainy day get a paper recycling kit and get the kids to rip up old used paper to make recycled paper, it can be great fun.
*Old magazines are appreciated by: doctor and dentists' offices, motels, and freinds.

Thank you and Happy Gardening! ~ Sarah

I use newspapers in the garden all the time. When I want to make a pathway...I start with a very thick layer of newspapers...it will basically eventually kill the weeds, grass or whatever is under it, and then I put mulch over the top. You could start a flower bed that way as well, and then cut holes in it, much like you would with landscape fabric, to plant. It really helps keep the weeds down!

Old newspapers or other used papers may be a material for making arts and crafts. I make baskets out of this materials. Spending time, together with your family, collecting and creating things out of recycled papers will sure be fun. What do you think?

We've actually used a commercially available kitty litter product years ago called Yesterday's News, made from compressed newsprint.

I assume home-shredded newsprint may work in some litter boxes, if the cats accept it? Our vet said that newsprint off the roll is virtually sterile.

Such elegant ideas. Indeed I am into recycling of mail envelopes. I also use pages from the magazines as to wrap some presents. Through this I know I am giving my little contribution to save the environment.

I actually use discarded A4 sized paper for printing drafts from my computer. Also to print some notes of what I learn from different sites in the virtual world. And yes, as small notepads too.

Hi there! I'm new here hoping more things about gardening and read this post of yours. Do you mean to say that we can easily kill weeds just by covering them with newspapers or any kinds of paper as long as they're covered?

Hmm... I don't really do that. It is fun , yes, but its also trouble some after you recycled it by making some crafts with your family or children. If a news paper is recycled and is made a craft, what then? Its not like that would be very beautiful and can be kept or displayed in the house for so long right?

I've heard of that before. It is a good idea of recycling news papers. Even I have done it before for our kittens and you'll really feel the relief after you've recycled the materials.

I do some of those tips. If you got plenty of papers at home, just donate some of those. I would love to try making baskets out of that material. Can anyone provide me some simple procedures?

Old news paper and magazine can be used to create a beautiful photo frame and other creative crafts. This is what my nieces and cousins doing during there free time. I guess, this is really something good, because, aside that you help our environment, and saved money, you were also be able to have bonding moment with your family in doing this. Do you also made decorative products out of old materials?

As for me I don't donate them. There are some junk shops that would buy paper you know.

That's a nice idea. As for me, whenever I tear papers and put them under the soil, they don't seem to disintegrate at all.

Great tips! I just started using old magazines (the ones that friends & family don't want to read) as wrapping paper. I try to pick pages that have interesting/fully pictures. It is a good way of opening up a dialogue to talk with people about other earth friendly tips.

I guess we all have different preferences. I would usually donate it to students because they use it as art materials. Anyway, I tried making a mosaic out of the pictures in the magazine. All you have to do is cut it out and frame it. I displayed my artwork in my bedroom, just to be different. Isn't fun?

Of course, it could also give you a beautiful product that you wish to be done. Its just a matter of creativity, my dear friend. Do you know that most of the kids love to make arts? In this manner, you are not only saving money to buy some arts materials, but you also help your child develop their creativity or being artistic.

Peel the labels from empty plastic soda bottles. Use adhesive remover and a paper towel to remove any residue. Wash the soda bottles thoroughly and let them dry completely. Using a utility knife or scissors, carefully cut off top of each bottle. But how to start the first cut? Yahoo Answers “best answer” recommends heating a screwdriver on the gas and melting a hole which you then cut with a pair of good scissors.
