Fall is the time of year to take a few extra steps to prepare your garden for winter. By doing so, it will not only ensure the quality of the soil, but future plants as well. The following steps will save you time in spring when you begin preparing your garden for a new growing season:
Remove old plant growth. Also be sure to remove any pest eggs and disease spots.
Plant a cover crop (one that you don't plan to harvest). The cover crop will protect the soil and discourage the growth of winter weeds. When spring arrives, the crop will provide organic nutrients when it is tilled into the soil.
If you prefer not to plant a cover crop, rototill the soil and cover with mulch. The mulch will help discourage winter weeds and prevent soil erosion.
